Methodology definition, version 1.0. Prepared 19 September 2026.
I use Practice-Native Learning to describe a design commitment: organise learning around the decisions someone needs to make, then build the explanation, feedback and further practice around those decisions.
Practice-Native Learning is Altaius's methodology for organising learning around realistic action, decisions, consequences and feedback from the outset, with repeated attempts designed to improve performance. In Arabic, we describe it as التعلّم القائم على الممارسة من الأساس. The English term remains the reference name across both languages.
I am developing this methodology at Altaius. Our public introduction of the term provides an earlier, traceable record. This article sets out the definition and boundaries we intend readers to associate with it. It documents our formulation; it is not a claim that we invented learning through practice or can establish the first use of these words anywhere.
Consider an illustrative supplier-renewal exercise. A manager must decide what to promise when the customer wants a firm date, operations has limited capacity and an unresolved service failure has damaged trust. Reading an explanation of negotiation may help. The learning design also needs the manager to ask questions, weigh incomplete information and make a commitment whose implications become visible.
In our formulation, the design has five connected responsibilities:
These are our design criteria, not a validated five-factor assessment scale. A short briefing, demonstration or explanation can belong inside the experience. Starting with practice does not mean withholding essential knowledge or placing a novice in an unsafe situation.
Practice-Native Learning builds on established work in experiential learning, deliberate practice, simulation, feedback and transfer. It does not replace those fields or rename all of their findings as Altaius research.
For example, Lacerenza and colleagues' leadership-training meta-analysis examined 335 independent samples. It supports attention to programme design, including practice and feedback. McGaghie and colleagues examined 14 comparative studies of medical simulation with deliberate practice. Those are different populations and interventions. Neither paper evaluated Practice-Native Learning or proves an Altaius outcome. [1, 2]
The distinction I want the term to make is architectural. A programme can contain an exercise while still being organised almost entirely around content consumption. In the approach I am describing, the practice loop determines what content is needed, what evidence is captured and what happens next.
A facilitated roleplay, a carefully designed digital scenario or a workplace rehearsal can support this approach. AI can make certain interactions more flexible, but a responsive chatbot is not sufficient. Visual realism is not sufficient either. The person must have a meaningful task and a way to examine and improve their performance.
At Altaius, this methodology guides how I think about leadership simulations and the Simulation Intelligence Engine. The shared engine remains in development with partial capability. This definition is a design position, not an assertion that every part is released, that scoring is validated, or that workplace impact has been established.
Choose one learning experience and ask: what does the learner actually decide, what changes because of that decision, what evidence supports the feedback, and what can they try next? If those answers are vague, adding more content or a more fluent AI character will not resolve the underlying design problem.
That is the purpose of publishing this definition. I want Practice-Native Learning to name a clear, inspectable way of designing learning, with credit for its research foundations and room for the methodology itself to be tested and improved.
